Can the Media Police Itself?

When Trudy Beyak was a guest speaker at the University of the Fraser Valley, she brought forward the ideals every journalist must strive to achieve.

“I don’t know how many of you have heard of Meyer Nurenberger. He was a feisty reporter who interviewed Albert Einstein, and Otto Frank, the father of Anne Frank, and covered the [Nazi] Nuremberg and Eichmann trials,” she said.

Nurenberger wrote that a newspaper should reveal the errors and crimes that are committed in society in order to make the society which it serves, a better one.

“Those are the marching orders of every good journalist.”

Do you want to know the secret to being peaceful and happy?

What is holding you back in your life?

Sharing the “story behind the story” at the Chilliwack Christian Women’s Club, recently, Trudy Beyak explained to the crowd that she had never dreamed of being a journalist. In fact, she faced some major hurdles in life. She was labeled a slow learner as a child and never quite fit in, at school. She reeled from one crisis to another when a rebellious teenager. Saddled by insecurities as a young adult, she worked as a cleaning lady for years, believing she had attained the top of her “career ceiling.”

So how did she become a journalist? That’s the story behind the story.

The key to building courage in life is to start by having faith in God, one day at a time, and taking small steps at a time, says Beyak. She encourages people to try to begin each morning with a prayer and a time to read and meditate on the Bible for wisdom.

A joyful, peaceful life is built on these three simple steps!

Trust God, pray, and read what God has to say!
